Competitive go-karting is so much more than just racing well. It involves a considerable amount of time, energy and resources. To start with, serious go-karters would need their own go-kart, either brand new or used. But one would eventually require a new go kart for a more competitive racing.
A starter pack is available at the Association of Racing Karts School (or ARKS) and at the Motor Sports Association (MSA). This includes a karting license application and a DVD for assistance on the driving test. At this time of writing, the pack costs £42.
If you have fully prepared, you can take the ARKS test which is all about flag rules and racing regulations. And you couldn't go without the obligatory driving test. All this cost £80. In case you don't have your own go-kart, you should prepare an additional fee to hire one.
If you are eighteen years old or over, you need to take the medical test. Your GP will partially fill out the form.
With all these successfully accomplished, you can go to the MSA (Motor Sports Association) for the £29 karting license. You will need to furnish them with the results of your ARKS test. With this karting license, you can set off for competitive racing.
With a karting license on hand, you have the access to kart club memberships. There are junior karting classes for ages 12 to 16; and senior classes for those older. Club members can race at every club circuit; however you can only join championship competitions for your own club. There are costs in joining the races, but discounts are normally given to club members.
If you are proven to be good at club championships, you may compete on national competitions. For this, you will need to get a karting license for National Grade A way before the date of the event. After this, international championships, such as World or European Competitions, are yours for the taking.
Competitive motor sports are expensive ventures. Go-karting, as a motor sport, maybe cheaper than the others, but still, it requires a considerable sum. As a general rule in every sport – the higher the level, the more costs it entails. But if you are really into it, you can look into getting financial sponsorships to help you with the costs. Do not let financial issues hinder you from reaching your dream of being a champ.
